Depression-How Can I Help Someone

Published: February 22, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I wish to know how to help a person with depression that cannot afford medicine? Is there anyway without medicine that you can cure it? Like keeping busy or some sort of other way? Thank you.

Dear Depression-How Can I Help Someone,

TeenHealthFX thinks you sound like a good person who is trying to help a friend. If the person you are referring to is clinically depressed, he/she needs to be evaluated to see if he/she would benefit from medication. Not being able to afford mediation should never be reason not to seek treatment. Many insurance companies and community programs will provide medication to those who cannot afford it. Most communities also have Mental Health Centers or Hospital Clinics, which can provide treatment for little or no charge.

Often times the person does not need medication and talking with a mental health professional can make the problem better.

Talk to your friend and let him/her know you are concerned. Encourage them to talk to their parents, a counselor or the school nurse. Let them know that there is help out there. If you do not know how to do this, How about showing them the TeenHealthFX website so they know they are not alone?
