Acne & Scarring / Question
Published: March 13, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have these clogged up pores on my arms, and I pick them a lot. I've been doing this since I was about nine, and I'm thirteen now. I wanted to know if whether or not there was something wrong with me. I don't think it's a nervous habit, because I do it simply for pleasure, or as a SMALL stress reliever. PLEASE help me by giving my some tips on how to stop PICK PICK PICKING!!!

Dear Obsessive Picker,
It is normal to have clogged pores on any part of your body. As you grow and develop, your skin is constantly changing and producing more oil. Blackheads are clogged hair follicles that contain both oil and tightly packed skin cells. These are usually the culprits of clogged pores. Although we cannot make a diagnosis over the Internet, another very common condition that looks like clogged pores that can occur on the arms is Keratosis Pilons. Regardless, these clogged pores should not be picked at. Picking or applying pressure to the pore can stretch the pore walls forcing the oil and dead skin cells that have created the clog further down. This can in turn create an infection, scarring or worse acne in the area. FX recommends seeing a doctor for them, preferably a dermatologist to get an accurate diagnosis.
In the meantime, try to avoid the area as much as possible. The years of picking has created a habit that is not good for your skin and may have led to further clogged pores. Try a different stress reliever such as exercise, reading, writing or meditation. It may be hard to stop yourself from picking. If you are unable to stop, you should speak to your doctor or school nurse. Like nail biting, picking at the skin, may be a symptom of stress and anxiety that needs further treatment.
