Birth Control Methods / Question
Published: February 12, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, I had been taking Othro Tri-cyclen for over three years and I am now three months pregnant. It was unexpected, because it happened while I was on the pill. I took the pill every morning at 9, I never missed them and I was not taking any other medication that could have interfered. My ex is now accusing me of going off the pill and I didn't. I know the pill is not %99 accurate. Has this happened before to some people? How can I show him the facts that it is not %99?

Dear Getting Pregnant On The Pill,

It is very rare that you became pregnant while on the pill, especially since you have described your pill usage as nearly perfect. The pill has proven itself to be a highly effective method of birth control when taken correctly (the same time every day - 99% effective). This said, there is always a slight chance that you could become pregnant. Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot do any better in backing up your cause.

FX is concerned though, because the bigger issue is that you stated that are pregnant. And although you may want to clear your name with your ex, you really need to concentrate on getting medical care and figuring out what you are going to do. You do have some options (continuing the pregnancy and keeping the baby, adoption or abortion). Because you stated you are 3 months pregnant, if you have not seen a doctor, you need to ASAP. Pregnancy is a big thing and one that should not be taken lightly.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
