Doing A Lot of Drama

Published: August 8, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

TFX, I am a drama student, but ever since I began to do a lot of drama, I feel as if I'm living in a dream. I'm always making up stories as I go along. Today, for example, I servant jade, my objective is too go out and get the groceries for the queen, if I over spend on the money that she gave me, I will be fired. I need this job, because I have 3 children at home, ect ect ect... Is this normal, and if it is, is it childish? As I am a 16 yo girl?

Dear Doing A Lot of Drama,

Since you are a drama student it makes sense that you would like to create scenarios where you can role play and put your acting skills to use. There is nothing wrong with playing imaginary characters as a form of entertainment or practicing your art. Some people find it therapeutic since it involves them using their creative talents.

The only way this could be problematic is if you spent the majority of your time in this imaginary world or were beginning to have trouble differentiating reality from fantasy. Any activity that is used as a way of not dealing with a person’s day to day functioning can be problematic. The same could be said of people your age who spend an extraordinary amount of time on social media or playing video games. It becomes more of an issue of not what you are doing but what you are not doing or avoiding.

Not being able to distinguish reality from fantasy could be a symptomatic of a significant psychiatric disorder and would need to be evaluated by a mental health professional.
