15 Months Later it is Still There

Published: August 30, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

So, about a year or so ago I noticed a sort of red vertical line going down the bottom of my penis. It looks very similar to a rash, and there are tiny spots around it (I'm not sure if that's related though). I figured that, if it WAS a rash, that I could leave it alone and it would fade over time. Around 15 months later it's still here. Do you have any idea what this might be? And if so, what can I do about it? I don't feel that it's serious enough to see a doctor about, as there have not been any other effects besides the line...well, being there. Is there something I can do about this myself?

Dear 15 Months Later it is Still There,

Diagnosing over the internet is really about taking your best guess. Some people may get it right much of the time, but why take that chance. Seeing a trained medical profession is a much more scientific approach to taking care of your health and will give you much better results.

Red lines on the underside of the penis are common. It results from fetal developmental in the womb where the scrotum (the developmental equivalent of the labia in females) and penis close toward the midline and fuse together and can result in what looks like a line.

If there is any itching, swelling or discomfort associated with the rash then you should see a doctor. You may want to see a doctor anyway since it seems to be causing you some anxiety. Knowing for sure what is going on will go a long way to relieving any worry you have been experiencing. Chances are it is nothing but only a doctor can confirm that for sure.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
