How Do I Eat A Healthy Diet At My College Dining Hall?

Dear How Do I Eat A Healthy Diet At My College Dining Hall?,

I just started college and I've been gaining some weight. I think I'm having a hard time figuring out how to eat at the dining hall with all the choices. I might treat myself to too many treats sometimes. I'm so used to just eating whatever my mom cooked or had in the house. I'm feeling a little lost about how to eat healthy and make sure I don't gain any more weight at college.

TeensHealth has an article, Healthy Dining Hall Eating, that will give you plenty of guidance and suggestions so you know how to navigate your college dining hall in the healthiest way possible.

Some of their key points include:

  • Make sure your food choices include a good balance of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, lean meats (or other healthy sources of protein if you are a vegetarian), low-fat or nonfat dairy
  • Watch out for snacks high in sugar, fats, and calories. Try combo foods of protein and carbs instead, such as peanut butter and apple or yogurt mixed with low-fat granola.
  • Pick whole-grain carbs (brown rice, whole-grain breads, cereals, and pasta) over processed ones (white rice, white bread, regular pasta)
  • Pay attention to portions
  • Stop eating when you start to feel – don’t wait until you feel stuffed to stop eating.
  • Stay hydrated with water
  • Avoid high calorie drinks, such as soda and juice
  • If you have a treat, such as fries or ice cream, just take note of how often you are having it. While treats in moderation are fine, an ice cream sundae a day can easily pack on the pounds.
  • Don’t linger in the dining hall, which opens up the possibility to go back for more feed that you don’t really need.
  • Stock up on some healthy snacks for your dorm room from the dining hall or your local grocery store so you are well-prepared for any snack attacks.
