Suicide / Question
Published: October 23, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Please help I'm going to kill myself soon. I just have no one to help me. I got a therapist and pills but the pills make my emotions repressed until they're too much and explode in one big freakish panic attack that lasts at least an hour. I need help NOW. Please help.

Dear Big Freakish Panic Attack,
TeenHealthFX wants you to take the time to realize that there are people in your life who are there to help you. Your parents were concerned enough to see to it that you got professional help. Then there is the therapist and the doctor who prescribes your medication. It is extremely important that you are honest with these professionals who are treating you. If you are suicidal and the medication is not working then you need to let them know. You need to decide whether the medication causes you to bottle up your emotions or this is a pattern of behavior for you. In either case the medication does not seem to be having the desired effect and you should talk to your doctor about other options. Finding the right medication for an individual is sometimes a process that involves different trials of medications until the most productive one is found. Bear in mind that medication is not a magical cure, but definitely can relieve symptoms that can cause life to be overwhelming. You are still going to need therapy to develop coping strategies and problem solving skills that are necessary to be able to cope when life does not seem fair.
If you get to the point that you are seriously considering suicide or are afraid of your impulses then you need to seek help immediately. You can call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room. In northern New Jersey you can also call the crisis hotline from Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Outside this area call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline, 1-800-999-9999, 24 hours, 7 days a week.
