Worry Too Much
Published: July 6, 1999
Lately I've noticed that I worry a lot, and it keeps me up at night. I seem to be worried about so many things like fights with my parents, getting good grades, and my boyfriend. Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy -- my heart beats fast, I can't breathe and I feel like I'm going to die! What's wrong with me?

Dear Worry Too Much,
Worrying about problems is normal, however; you are describing symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks.
Symptoms of Panic attacks:
- increased heart rate or heart feels like it is pounding out of your chest
- shortness of breath
- tingling of hands and feet
Anxiety and Panic disorders are treatable. Counseling and medication can help. Here are some tips to try first. Listen to relaxing music, take slow, long deep breaths, exercise and distract yourself by getting involved with a fun activity. If your symptoms continue or interfere with your life, contact your family doctor or a mental health professional.
If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
