Feeling Down

Published: July 22, 1999
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm tired all the time. My parents say I have an attitude but I really don't care. I want every one to leave me alone but I'm also sick of feeling this way. What should I do?

Dear Feeling Down,

Symptoms of serious depression are:

  • Frequent sadness or irritability
  • Decreased energy
  • Decreased interest in usual activities
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Difficulty with sleep (sometimes too much or not enough)
  • Lack of concentration (decline in school grades)

If several of these symptoms describe how you are feeling, get help. Start with a medical doctor because depression has a biological basis and medications can be prescribed to help the symptoms. Also, counseling is often very helpful.

If feel that you are in crisis or are afraid of your impulses then you need to seek help immediately. You can call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room. If you live in northern New Jersey you can call the crisis hotline at Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Or, you can call the National Hopeline Network 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433).
