Hairy Situations: Too Much, Too Little & Shaving / Question
Published: July 30, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been losing a lot of hair lately and I don't know what I should do to prevent it.

Dear Losing Hair,

There are a few things you can do to slow down hair loss but there is no way to stop hair loss. However, since TeenHealthFX does not know your age or the extent of your hair loss, we do not feel comfortable commenting on the situation right now. The concern is that there may be something causing your hair loss other than a genetic predisposition. If this were the case, we would be ignoring a problem that needs to be addressed. Please write us back and give more specifics.

In the meantime, you should talk to your doctor about your recent hair loss. He/She will be able to tell you if there is a reason to be concerned and how to address the problem.

It may help to take out the family photo album and check out the pictures. If you see a pattern of balding men around your age then you may have your answer.

If you need to consult with a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.

Signed: TeenHealthFX
