Dear Tailbone Hurts,
A pilonidal cyst is a small opening at the bottom of your tailbone that can become infected and filled with pus. When this happens it is then referred to as a pilonidal abscess, which looks like a large pimple at the base of the tailbone just above the crack of the buttocks. It is more common in males and usually happens more frequently in young people (thirties and under).
Most doctors believe that ingrown hairs cause pilonidal cysts, and it is common to find hair follicles inside the cyst. Another theory is that the cysts develop from riding long periods in a car. The motion of the ride can cause trauma to the tailbone region that can result in a cyst forming. During World War II, more than 80,000 soldiers developed pilonidal cysts that required a hospital stay. Doctors suspected that the cysts were due to irritation from riding in bumpy Jeeps. For awhile it was actually called "Jeeps disease."
Since your tailbone is hurting then you should see a doctor because there is good chance that it needs to be treated. A pilonidal cyst is the same as a boil and cannot be treated by antibiotics. Your physician needs to make an incision to drain the wound and follow your recovery. While a complete cure is possible, even with surgery there is a chance the cyst could come back.
If you would like to make an appointment with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey, you can call 973.971.6475.
