Dear TeenHealthFX,
Is Proactive a good cleanser for acne prone skin? In other words, does it work?

Dear Proactive Skin Cleanser,
TeenHealthFX does not know if this highly advertised skin treatment system would work for you. There are many causes of acne, and we cannot determine what products would be most beneficial for the types of symptoms that you are experiencing. Our recommendation (before trying anything) is to visit a dermatologist, a physician who specializes in the treatment of the skin, to have an examination of any acne-prone areas. The doctor may make recommendations for cleansers, antibiotics, gels, or pills that will alleviate some of the symptoms of acne. You can ask your primary care physician for a referral to a dermatologist, or in northern NJ, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475 to make an appointment.
It is very important not only to follow any regimens that the doctor prescribes, but to follow-up with appointments if the treatments are successful or if another approach needs to be explored. Dealing with acne may be a long and frustrating process, and there often is not a magic pill or solution that is discovered immediately. Making sure that your skin is well cleansed with water and a mild soap can help.
We hope that you will get a professional opinion before spending money on any treatment. For more information about Acne and skin problems, check out this subcategory of questions "Skin Concerns: Acne, Stretch Marks, Moles, Dryness, Etc".
