Pubic Hair / Question
Published: December 10, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

When I first had sex I lost a lot of pubic hair. Is this normal?

Dear Lost Hair,

Although losing pubic hair during or after sex is uncommon, it is probably normal. The loss of hair during or after sex may be due to the friction and rubbing that happens during sexual intercourse. Your body does go through periods of hair growth and non-growth. If you are not growing hair or you are losing hair in your pubic area or on other areas of your body, it is important to see a doctor. There are many medical conditions that have symptoms of hair loss.

Having sex and being a teenager can be very confusing, it is good that you are aware of the changes in your body. Along with sex and growing up, you have new responsibilities that include taking care of yourself and your body to prevent any sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and pregnancy. When you decide to have sex, make sure it is a well thought out decision and practice safer sex. You and your partner should also go to a teen health center to discuss your sexual health, and pregnancy and STD prevention. If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.5199. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please call your local teen health center. Teen health centers will see teenagers confidentially (meaning you do not need your parent's permission) and on a reduced cost or no cost basis.
