Published: May 2, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Could masturbation cause health problems? Does it affect your period or the rate at which your breasts develop? Also, can a doctor tell whether you masturbate or not?

Dear Could Masturbation Cause Health Problems,

Masturbation questions are very common among both female and male TeenHealthFX users. And, many ask questions and really want to know if it will effect what happens to them during puberty and health problems associated with this normal, healthy activity.

To set the record straight, masturbation does not cause any health problems or affect puberty in any way (like your period or breast development). Also, your doctor cannot tell whether or not you masturbate.

TeenHealthFX has answered many questions from females about masturbation. Here are just a few for you to check out:

If you have any other questions, please feel free to write back to AskFX or search our website for more information. As always if you feel that something is not right, get it checked out by your doctor. If you do not have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475.
