Male Puberty Issues / Question
Published: July 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 17yrs and my penis is only about 3 inches erect. My voice has deepened, and I have a lot of hair above my penis. I have very little hair under my arms, and no hair on my face. Am I gonna be doomed with a small penis and no facial hair for the rest of my life? Is there anything a doctor could prescribe like hormones?

Dear Small Penis, No Facial Hair,

TeenHealthFX understands your concern and wants you to know that it is very natural to question the changes you are going through. In fact, the most frequently asked question among male FX users is - Is my penis size normal?

Your penis size sounds completely normal and you may even experience a little more penis growth throughout the rest of your teen years. There have been many studies on the average penis size. The average adult male penis size is about 6 inches with an erection. For a teenager whose body is still growing, the average erect penis size is between 2 - 5 inches. This is an average, some males will be larger and some males will be smaller, and this will depend on the person?s stage of physical development.

To answer your question about artificial enlargement, there is no natural way to enlarge your penis. Furthermore, TeenHealthFX would not recommend that you try or buy any other method of enlarging your penis (more information on this, please see "Want To Enlarge My Penis". Your penis size is dependent upon your genetic make-up.

Some men feel very upset and maybe even embarrassed because their penis is smaller. This is just one part of your body and personality. There are many other parts to you. Many teenagers feel upset about their body and the changes it is going through. If you feel that something is wrong with you or are insecure about your body and the way it looks, seek some help and guidance from your doctor.

As far as facial hair and underarm hair goes, there is not much you can do but wait. Hair growth is often the last change that accompanies puberty. In the end, your genes will determine the rate of development. Each male goes through puberty at a period of time that is normal for that individual, some may be slower than others may but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Some men do not grow much facial hair, and therefore they may not grow a lot if hair under their arms either. It all depends on the individual. Like we said before each man has his own growing cycle, but if you are concerned that you may not be developing completely do not hesitate to ask you doctor if everything is okay.

If you continue to be concerned by your development you may want to talk to your doctor or even an adolescent medicine physician to discuss your worries. If you live in Northern New Jersey, you can contact the Adolescent /young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475.
