Sexually Transmitted Diseases / Question
Published: August 5, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm dating a girl who has genital herpes. I'd like to have sex but not an infection. What are my risks with respect to kissing, mutual masturbation, fellatio, cunillingus, vaginal and anal sex? What can I do to mitigate those risks?

Dear Dating A Girl With Genital Herpes,

TeenHealthFX is glad to hear that you are concerned about your sexual health and are taking steps to understand how to protect yourself and your partner. You certainly can practice safer sex methods and safer oral sex methods with a partner who has herpes and continue to have a fulfilling relationship, but it is very important that you understand all of the risks associated with this.

You are far from alone in your concern about Herpes. In fact, FX has answered very similar questions to yours. Check out Oral Sex Sores (gives detailed instructions on how to practice safer oral sex). In addition, please see What's Herpes, Herpes - An Oral Outbreak, Can I get Herpes I On My Privates, Herpes HSV1 Hypochondria and Is This Herpes, I Have Herpes and Can It Be HPV.

If you feel like you may have exposed to Herpes or any STD, and since you and your girlfriend are having sex, you should both get checked out by a doctor. If you live in northern New Jersey and would like more information or to make an appointment with a medical professional, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. Outside of northern New Jersey, call your local Planned Parenthood for a location and resources around you.
