Published: March 17, 2005

Dear TeenHealthFX,

How do I know if my boobs are getting bigger? And is it true that when they get itchy it means that they are growing?

Dear Itchy Boobs Are They Growing,

Just like with development of all of the other parts of your body, the development of breasts happens at different times for different people.

There are though 5 definite stages of typical breast development that you can read about here for more detailed information.   Generally speaking, by the start of your period, your breasts should be well on their way to developing due to increased hormone levels in your body.  If you are feeling itchiness in your breasts, it is most likely due to dry skin and not the onset of a growth period.  The skin on your breasts is often more delicate than on other parts of your body, so you might want to use a moisturizer to alleviate the problem.
