Dear Can I Have Sex Now?,

Just a reminder to our readers that TeenHealthFX does not respond to personal emails, but rather posts all answered questions on the website.

In terms of your question about whether or not you can have sex now, FX has serious concerns about a thirteen year old becoming sexually active. There is a certain degree of readiness and responsibility required when it comes to having sex to ensure that the act of having sex is a physically safe and emotionally healthy one. While there is a part of you that wants to have sex, at thirteen there are ways in which you still need to grow and develop that will allow for your first time to be a more healthy and happy experience.

FX also has concerns about your pursuing your best friend’s boyfriend for any kind of romantic or physical relationship. To get involved with this guy could easily lead to your friend feeling devastated, hurt, and disrespected by you – and your friendship could be over. While you may like this guy, you need to think about whether he is really worth losing a close friend over.

FX strongly suggests that when the time comes that you do decide to have sex, that you pick someone who you care about and who you feel cares strongly about you. FX also recommends that you speak with your parents, doctor, or school nurse about ways to practice safer sex to protect yourself against unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. Read “Updated Birth Control Information” under the Birth Control Methods category of the Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website.
