You really can't tell if someone has an STD infection just by looking at them.Being educated and informed about STD's is the first step in preventing transmission. However knowing the symptoms is not enough to protect you. Always practicing safer sex and knowing your partner's sexual history are crucial to preventing infection.
Some STD's do have visible symptoms. STD's, like herpes, produce sores or blisters around the genital area. Other STD's have symptoms such as burning during urination and foul smelling vaginal or penile discharge; however most STD's do not leave any physical clues for others to see. Be aware that condoms may not cover sores and will put you at risk for infection. You may be sexually active with an infected partner and not know until you experience symptoms. It is always important to practice safer sex and for you and your partner to be honest and open.
The only way to know if your partner has or has ever had an STD is to ask him/her. Asking can save you and your partner from heartache in the future. Also, if you are thinking about becoming sexually active with someone, you both should be checked out at a local teen health center.
