Female Body Concerns / Question
Published: December 2, 2009

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi.I have been experiencing extreme vaginal pain since the beginning of this week. I have never had sex before and I have no idea why this is happening to me.I am scared as to what may be the outcome of this matter but is also concerned whether or not I am just being over cautious or something.I feel pain in and around the labia, in addition I am experiencing abnormal itching, irritation, and pain when peeing at times. Also, I think it is affecting my tummy, as it also pains at times. I have no idea why this is occurring and I am very scared.....I would really appreciate an answer.Thank you in advance. X.X.

Dear Extreme Vaginal Pain,

TeenHealthFX cannot make any diagnoses over the web, but given that you are in extreme pain it is essential that you meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist, or adolescent medicine specialist right away. It is very possible that you are dealing with a urinary tract infection or some kind of gynecological infection – so it is important that you meet with a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis, as well as treatment for your symptoms that will help you to feel better.

Having pain or problems in the genital area can be scary and even embarrassing for some – especially teens. But know that your pain is nothing to be ashamed of – it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong or that you will be judged in any negative way. What it does mean is that you need medical attention and help from a doctor to get well. So please talk to a parent as soon as possible so arrangements can be made for you to get the necessary medical attention you need.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
