Alcohol Abuser

Published: November 15, 1999
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I feel I have a very serious alcohol problem. I drink daily, enjoy the feeling of being drunk and have come to school like this. I feel I am more relaxed and deal with things better. What can I do?

Dear Alcohol Abuser,

TeenHealthFX is on your side and agrees that you have an alcohol problem, which you define as serious. FX agrees that it is serious, especially since you may go to school or be in school loaded. Often it seems like you deal with things better when you have had something to drink, but that is not a good habit to get into since you might be using alcohol to help deal with stresses and problems more and more of the time. AND then you don't grow up normally by learning how not to cope in a mature way and run into a lot more problems. Usually when teens are using drugs/alcohol, there is other life problems. Sometimes it is inherited so there is a problem right from the beginning. Most of the time, it begins with using to feel better, to avoid painful feelings, and to deal with anger and disappointment, etc. Then, it goes on from there!

FX thinks that you should definitely do is go somewhere for an evaluation of the problem and get some advice on what to do. You should go to someone you know who understands alcohol problems, like a hospital with a substance abuse program or treatment center. There is a lot of help out there for you!

If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live outside Northern New Jersey, please call Alcoholics Anonymous or look in yellow pages of your phone book under Alcoholism to get further treatment information.
