Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic


What they do:
Provide emergency care and advanced life support to people who have suffered from an illness or injury outside of a hospital and transport patients to hospitals for further care.
 

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Associates or Bachelors degree (not required, programs are available)
  • EMT training - First Aid, CPR, vital signs, etc.
  • NREMT – Paramedic certification


What they make:
Salary depends on employment setting, geographic location and individual training and experience.  Median annual earnings of EMTs and Paramedics were $25,310 in 2004.  
 

Where they work:

  • Indoors and outdoors
  • Hospitals
  • Fire departments
  • Emergency medical services

Outlook:
Employment for Paramedics is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018.
