Dear I Don't Like Scars on My Wrist,

TeenHealthFX is glad that you have asked for help. That is a very brave and important step. Talking about cutting is not easy. Although, you don’t believe in therapists, FX wants to be clear that cutting can is a serious problem with various underlying issues. The problem is too complicated for you to deal with on your own. Issues like cutting have a compulsive component to them and require attention by mental health professionals. FX recommends that you speak to your parents so that arrangements can be made for you to meet with a therapist. Your parents may freak out at first but once the anger fades they will realize that you have been suffering and probably want to get you help.

A therapist can be a wonderful source of guidance and support during this difficult time, and can help you to become more aware of what contributes to your cutting and how to find alternate, healthier methods of dealing with stressors and any negative situations, thoughts, and feelings that you might be dealing with.

Your friends may feel like it’s too much for them to handle and may feel confused because they do not understand or cannot relate to your desire to cut and therefore avoid dealing with the situation.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.

You can also contact the Self-Injury Hotline (information only, not a crisis line) at 1-800-DON’T-CUT, 1-800-366-8288.
