I just recently turned 15, and I'm a female. Long story short, I KNOW I have depression, I have for a long time, but I have never been diagnosed because I can't see a doctor. Why? My dad has been out of a job for four years now, and our financial issues are not good. Our house is being foreclosed soon, and we don't have any money for anything, let alone a doctor...hence why I have never brought it up to my parents. But I cut and burn, and I really want help with my depression and to stop...I just don't know how because of the money issue. Please help!
TeenHealthFX is sorry to hear your family has some very rough times for the last couple of years and although your financial situation is bleak, it should not be a barrier to you getting the treatment you need. There are public or non-profit clinic with very low fees. Even if a low fee would be a problem then you would probably qualify for Medicaid which would also cover medical expenses as well.
Your present situation is very stressful and without the proper treatment it will be very difficult to break the cycle of self abuse. The fact that you are aware that his behavior is an unhealthy coping mechanism and that you need help from a professional shows that you are motivated for change. There are many mental health processionals and clinics recognize that finances should not be a barrier to getting help and have made these services available to people who are struggling financially.
To look for services in your state log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and scroll over “Location” in the upper right hand corner and a drop down menu with resources for each state will appear.
