Dry, Irritated Skin

Published: July 28, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
What can I do for dry cracky irritated skin on the legs and in the groin area? Seems like with the weather getting colder, it gets worse.

Dear Dry, Irritated Skin,

In the winter months, the air is very dry and can thus cause our skin to be as well. When the skin dries out it can become irritated more easily, and you may also see the accumulation of flaking skin.

Here are some tips:

  • Take fewer baths (and when you bathe, avoid hot water).
  • Moisturize your skin after bathing in order to prevent the skin from drying.
  • Avoid overdrying wet skin. Try patting your skin dry.
  • Avoid excessive use of soap.
  • Don't overheat your house, and use a humidifier if you live in a dry climate.

If the problem persists, TeenHealthFX recommends that you go see your doctor.  If you don't have a doctor and live in Northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
