Stretch marks plague both men and women equally. Unfortunately there is no miracle cure. Stretch marks often result after rapid weight gain or loss and normal development. The cause is still not known but it is believed to be a break down of elastin fibers under the skin. Stretch marks are tiny tears in the dermis (second layer or skin) that are permanent scars and vary in color; they may fade, but will always remain.
Tanning may not be the best solution to hide your stretch marks. Since stretch marks are an irregularity in your skin they may not tan at all or become more prominent. Remember that stretch marks result from damaged skin; this will make them more sensitive to light and its effects. You are right, tanning is not healthy. Overexposure to ultraviolet rays (real or artificial) can cause eye injuries, premature wrinkles and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Although there are no miracle cures there are certain products available to help minimize stretch marks. Look for products with Emu Oil, Oleic Acid, Cocoa Butter, Wheat Germ Oil, Vitamin E and Lanolin. These products will help strengthen your skin and minimize the stretch marks, but not erase them. With daily usage and time your stretch marks will fade.
