Fell Down A Flight Of Stairs - Butt Still Sore
Published: August 15, 2010
About a month ago, I fell down a flight of stairs and badly bruised my butt. Not my tailbone, but my buttcheeks themselves. So after a while the bruises went away, but the pain didn't. I still feel like I have massive bruises covering my whole butt. I feel like I must have fallen or bumped into something, but nothing else happened since then. It really hurts for me to run, sit, or lie down. The only thing that doesn't make it hurt is standing still or walking slowly. Touching or pressing on my butt hurts, and I looked in the mirror to be sure there weren't any more bruises there. Is there some kind of permanent damage that I could have done? I went to my mom for help and told her I was in pain, but she said, "It's probably muscular and there's nothing you can do about it but wait for it to get better." If there's some kind of nerve damage or something, is that fixable? Signed, Scared with sore butt

Dear Fell Down A Flight Of Stairs - Butt Still Sore,
A fall down the stairs that resulted in badly bruised behind means that blood vessels were broken and that there is probably muscle or soft tissue pain. As long as we’re just talking broken blood vessels and muscle pain, not broken bones or anything else more serious, this type of injury could take 4-6 weeks to heal. If it hasn’t healed in 4-6 weeks, the problem is getting worse in any way, or you continue to be worried about it and want a doctor to examine the area to ensure everything is on the mend, then schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.
If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
