Published: May 14, 2011
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Maybe a year ago I woke up one morning and my mouth wouldn’t open and it took about 10 minutes to get it to open and my jaw was never right from then I always have to move it over to the right before I open my mouth if I don’t I can’t open my mouth all the way and a couple days ago I got hit in the chin with a softball before a game and now the right side of my jaw is really sore and hurts when I open my mouth the weird way (moving it to the right first) and when I chew my food idk what that means can you please help me?!

Dear Jaw Really Hurts,

Your case is somewhat intricate since there are two issues at play here. First you woke up and inexplicably could not open your jaw and it “was never right from then.” A year later you suffered a trauma to the chin and which caused further complications with your jaw.

There is no reliable way that TeenHealthFX could give you an accurate diagnosis about your condition. You need to be seen by a doctor and most likely have X Rays taken. Your condition has not improved in a year and has recently been made worse by a blow to the chin from a softball. You should make the appointment with the doctor as soon as possible before the condition gets worse

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers
