Dear Sweat A Lot,

Sweating a lot can be embarrassing and even annoying. All of us sweat, but some people are plagued with excessive sweating known as Hyperhidrosis. This can be very embarrassing and cause problems in social settings like school. The least amount of heat, or physical or emotional activity can cause excessive sweating causing the person to become extremely self-conscious.

Hyperhidrosis often begins with puberty and improves with age. If the problem is causing you distress you may want to consult with your doctor. There is a typical therapy known as Drysol, which may dramatically decrease sweat production, but you will need a prescription. Your doctor can examine you and determine if this product would be appropriate for you.

There are also special undergarments that are specifically designed to absorb excessive sweat. These garments can help prevent the unsightly sweat stains as well as protect your clothing. They are commonly referred to as dress shields.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
