Red Spot Under Right Nipple

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi. For a couple of days I have noticed a fairly large red spot directly under my right nipple. (I am 14-year-old female) It is not raised, there is no pain or itching, it doesn't seem to be a rash, and I didn't rub against anything. I'm also not sexually active, if that makes any difference. I am starting to worry about what this spot is and if it's going to go away. I know you can't diagnose me over the Internet, but do you have any idea what this could be or if I should go to a doctor? Please give me some advice. Thanks for all your help.

Dear Red Spot Under Right Nipple,

TeenHealthFX is glad to hear that the red spot you talked about is neither painful nor itchy but we can’t diagnose what it might be over the Internet.

The spot you described can be a lot of things.  It may be a skin rash or could’ve been caused by some form of irritation.  It can also be a form of drug allergy or a skin infection like ringworm.  It is important that you note any symptom that may be associated with that red spot.  Note any changes, like whether it is increasing in size or changing color, or if you are getting more spots or if it is becoming itchy, painful or uncomfortable.

The best thing to do is to see your doctor who can look at it and diagnose it.  Your doctor may refer you to a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in the skin, to have your spot further evaluated.  Once your doctor knows what is, he/she can make recommendations on how to treat it.  If you don’t have a physician and live in the Northern New Jersey area, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475.
