Tanning To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks?

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi, I'm a 19 year old male, who was 320lbs, but is now down below 200lbs, and I'm still scarred with stretch marks. I've heard that stretch mark can't be removed, and creams will only help to a certain degree. My question is, my skin is fairly white except on my lower arms and legs, if I got a tan would this help to hide the stretch marks? I also realize tanning isn't always healthy, if over done, but how about a light tan? I'm wondering if they'll almost be invisible with cream usage and tanning.

Dear Tanning To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks?,

Stretch marks plague both men and women equally. Unfortunately there is no miracle cure. Stretch marks often result after rapid weight gain or loss and normal development. The cause is still not known but it is believed to be a break down of elastin fibers under the skin. Stretch marks are tiny tears in the dermis (second layer or skin) that are permanent scars and vary in color; they may fade, but will always remain.

Tanning may not be the best solution to hide your stretch marks. Since stretch marks are an irregularity in your skin they may not tan at all or become more prominent. Remember that stretch marks result from damaged skin; this will make them more sensitive to light and its effects. You are right, tanning is not healthy. Overexposure to ultraviolet rays (real or artificial) can cause eye injuries, premature wrinkles and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Although there are no miracle cures there are certain products available to help minimize stretch marks. Look for products with Emu Oil, Oleic Acid, Cocoa Butter, Wheat Germ Oil, Vitamin E and Lanolin. These products will help strengthen your skin and minimize the stretch marks, but not erase them. With daily usage and time your stretch marks will fade.
