Is The Pill Affecting My Body or Could I Be Pregnant?

Published: March 14, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend fingered me with cum on his fingers. We kinda freaked so I took take action two days later. Now it's about two weeks later and now I feel so tired. Feel like I have to throw up I don't. Fatigue, breast soreness and frequent unination. My period is supposed to come two days ago or anything this week. Is the pill just affecting my period and body? Or could I be pregnant?

Dear Is The Pill Affecting My Body or Could I Be Pregnant?,

When you say that you “took action two days later” and then asked about the effect of “the pill” on your period and body, TeenHealthFX is assuming that you took emergency contraception (EC) and that is what you are asking about.

As for some of your symptoms, it is possible they are a result of taking emergency contraception. EC can be very effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within a certain time frame after having unprotected sex. However, it can have various side-effects, including nausea and disrupted menstrual cycles. So the symptoms you are experiencing could easily be a result of EC and not because of pregnancy.

There are also other possibilities for the symptoms you are experiencing. They could be a result of your menstrual cycle, stress, anxiety, or infection (possibly causing the frequent urination). But there is a slight possibility of pregnancy given that semen did come in contact with your vagina and EC is not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy.

At whatever point you have definitely missed your period, FX recommends that you take a pregnancy test. You can purchase a pregnancy test at your local grocery store or drugstore. You can also get a pregnancy test from a healthcare provider. If you take the test on your own, be sure to read and follow the directions carefully. If the test is positive, then it is important to meet with a health care professional so that you can talk about your pregnancy options. If your test is negative, you might want to consider taking another pregnancy test after a couple of days to confirm the results.

If you continue to go without a period despite a negative pregnancy test, continue with the frequent urination, or have any other questions or concerns about symptoms you are experiencing, FX recommends you meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist or adolescent medicine specialist. A medical professional can assess the situation, determine the cause(s) of your symptoms and make any needed treatment recommendations.

TeenHealthFX is not sure whether you have had intercourse, but would also like to encourage you to speak to your doctor about safer sex precautions for the future. Doctors generally recommend that teens and young adults who choose to be sexually active use condoms each and every time they have sex to protect against unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs, as well as a back-up method of birth control such as the pill or birth control shot. Your doctor can make the best recommendations for you and discuss with you how to use properly use birth control to maximize its effectiveness.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

FX also suggests that you and your boyfriend check out the links in our Resource of the Month: Planned Parenthood Resources on Safer Sex so that you can both learn about sexual readiness, how pregnancy happens, pregnancy tests, emergency contraception, birth control, STDs and more. The more educated you are about these topics, the more likely you will make healthy decisions for yourself when it comes to your sexual health.
