Sexually Transmitted Diseases / Question
Published: August 20, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have what looks like a rash on my inner thigh, mostly near my groin area. Sometimes it gets really itchy and little bumps pop up. What is it? I've had sex once and I read in a magazine about HPV and I'm really scared that's what I have. I can't ask my mom to bring me to a doctor because then I have to tell her that I have had sex. Please help me. What is it? And if it is HPV, does that mean eventually I'll get Herpes? I've tried everything to get them to go away. I thought maybe it was because of sweat so I put baby powder there and its not as itchy anymore. Please help me, can it be???

Dear Can It Be HPV?,

TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose your rash, but we can inform you better about what HPV is and other possible problems that you could be suffering from. However, only a doctor can tell you exactly what it is that you have and how to solve it.

HPV, Human Papilloma Virus, commonly known as genital warts is a very common STD in the U.S. HPV is spread usually by intercourse and other sexual activities. In women, the symptoms can appear weeks to months after exposure. Visible genital warts look like small painless hard spots on the bottom of the vaginal opening, but can also appear on the surrounding areas, anus and cervix. Warts in men occur on the head and shaft of the penis and scrotum. The virus multiplies in moist conditions and one can attempt to prevent the spreading of the virus by practicing safer sex. Condoms help to prevent it, but do not always prevent the spread of the virus. STDs, like HPV and Herpes are not protected 100% by condoms because condoms cannot cover every inch of a person's genitals. STD's can be spread when an infected individual's area (which can be anywhere in the genital area including the upper thigh) comes into contact with their partner's genitals, this is known as skin to skin transmission.  This is why it is so important to have regular Dr. visits in order to know your own health and also that of your partner.

Your condition does not sound like HPV and could be caused by many different things, but remember only a doctor can know for sure.

Herpes is caused by a completely different virus and is not caused by HPV. Look at What's Herpes? for a more in-depth information about the Herpes virus, its causes and symptoms.

Your rash could also be a common dermatitis or skin irritation from tight clothing or the type of soap you might be using. TeenHealthFX is wondering whether you are shaving in this area - - This is a common cause of skin irritation.  The point is all skin rashes/lesions are different. It is vital, knowing that you have had sex, to consult a doctor.

If you don't feel comfortable telling your mom you might want to think about going to a teen health center or local Planned Parenthood who can see you without your parent's permission, confidentially and on a reduced or no cost basis. If you live in Northern New Jersey call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. These doctors will be able to give you a better idea of what your rash could be and get you better oriented with how to not only solve the problem, but also from preventing any further occurrences like this. Stay positive!!
