Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have Herpes - can I get rid of it?

Signed: I Have Herpes

Dear I Have Herpes,

Unfortunately once you get infected with the Herpes Simplex Virus, you cannot get rid of it.  There are, however, ways to help lessen the impact of Herpes on your life so that you can have a safe sexual life and minimize your partner's exposure to the virus.

For more information about Herpes see Herpes HSV1 Hypochondriac.

What can you do about Herpes?  If you have recurrent outbreaks there are some medications that will lessen the duration and limit the outbreak.  Also, be absolutely sure to use a barrier method of birth control, like a condom or dental dam when having sex to reduce your partner?s exposure.  Remember, even without visible lesions you can still pass the virus on.  Honestly talk with your partner before you have sex about herpes and what you both are willing to do together.  Lastly, if you haven't already, speak to your doctor about what to do and get tested for other sexually transmitted diseases..  If you don't have a doctor you can be seen at a teen health center confidentially at a low/no cost fee.  In Northern New Jersey area, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment or call your local Planned Parenthood.
