Can't Masturbate

Published: May 22, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 16 year old female. Whenever I try to masturbate it hurts too much to enjoy. Is there anything else I could use to masturbate with?

Dear Can't Masturbate,

Dear Can't Masturbate,

First it is important to find out why you are experiencing pain. You may want to check yourself to see if there is any redness, swelling or discharge around the vagina. If there is, it could be as simple as an allergic reaction to a lotion you are using, or a yeast infection.

In addition, you should see your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Your doctor is aware of all aspects of health including sexuality.  He/she will be able to advise on any medical treatment if it is needed, as well as ways of pleasuring yourself that won't cause you discomfort.

Since we do not know the method you are using to masturbate, it is hard for us to know why you are feeling pain. You may want to vary you technique to find someway that is agreeable with your body. If you are using you fingers or hand, try a method that involves less friction. Other ways of masturbation include using a pillow instead of you hands, a stream of water, or a vibrator.

Maybe you need to change the environment you are trying to pleasure yourself in.  If you are rushing, feel awkward, self-conscious or scared, you probably will not have the most pleasurable experience. Find a quiet time where you can be by yourself without interruption. Do something that helps you relax such as a bath or soft music. Allow yourself to become aroused then experiment with your body. Eventually you will find what is most enjoyable for you.

If you would like to meet with a doctor you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
