Pubic Hair / Question
Published: August 13, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hello. I just turned 16. Lately my pubic hair has been really thinning out. I'm wondering maybe it is because I am on my period. But it has continuously been thinning out in the past couple months. Can there be anything wrong with me? Or is it just hormonal imbalance occurring during puberty?

Dear Wondering About Losing Pubic Hair,

You don't say how many hairs you are losing per day. Pubic hair is like the rest of the hair on your body - it grows in and then it sheds some. It comes in very thick and then will thin out at different periods during your lifetime. This can be due to fewer hormones at that time, the climate, or even what you have been eating. Also if you have been sick for any length of time it can sometimes affect the pattern of hair loss from any region of your body.

If you're concerned that you are losing an abnormal amount of hair, get checked out. If you do not have your own doctor and live in Northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 or Girl's Street - A Young Women's Health Program at 908.522.2555. They will be able to discuss your concerns and evaluate you.
