Masturbation / Question
Published: December 19, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 15-year-old girl and have never had sex. I masturbate by putting a teddy bear into me. Is this normal? Can I get pregnant or STD's? Please help me! I will stop if it is dangerous, but it feels so good.

Dear Teddy Bear to Masturbate,

It is very normal for a fifteen-year-old girl to masturbate. Using a teddy bear to stimulate you just happens to be the way you go about it. TeenHealthFX's only concern is that if the teddy bear is having direct contact with your vaginal area than the teddy bear could become unsanitary over time, which could lead to an infection. But this could occur with any object that you place in your vagina that is not hygienic. Masturbation is not dangerous and there is no need to stop if you enjoy it. If you check around on the website you'll find that there are many different ways for a woman to gratify herself.

You can only become at risk for pregnancy if a male's sperm enters your vaginal opening. It is not only limited to him ejaculating inside of you, but also having contact with live sperm in any variety of ways i.e. fingers, condoms and clothing puts you in jeopardy. Check out Condoms: How Does Someone Get Pregnant for more information.

You become at risk for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's) when you exchange body fluids with an infected person. This mostly occurs through sexual contact and sharing needles (IV, tattoos and piercing). This is why TeenHealthFX always encourages people who are sexually active to practice safer sex.

If you get to the point where you are considering having a sexual relationship it would be a good idea to make an appointment with a local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. The professionals there will be able to advise you on birth control and answer any questions you may have. You can also be seen without parental consent and for little or no cost.

If you live in northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 if you need an appointment.
