Dear TeenHealthFX,

Can a male catch a yeast infection?

Signed: Males & Yeast Infections

Dear Males & Yeast Infections,

Yes, males can get a yeast infection (called in the medical world Candida Albicans).  It presents as an itchy, plaque type rash with occasional scaling (dry skin).  Most of the time for men, it is sexually transmitted.  For women, yeast infections many times are not transmitted to them sexually, but rather from tight nylon underwear, etc.  For more information on yeast infections in females, see Discharge - A Yeast Infection.

There are treatments for men and women and this is completely curable.  A person with a yeast infection is advised not to have sex until after the infection is gone and the prescription is completed.  People can get yeast infections in different parts of their body too.  Be aware that a person can have an oral yeast infection as well, although this is rare in persons with a healthy immune system.
