Masturbation / Question
Published: April 10, 2000
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a female. I used a portable showerhead and was cleaning down there. I had an orgasm. I did not have my period after that this month and I am a little worried. Can you please email me back because I do not usually come to boards and I need help?

Dear Masturbation & Missed Periods,
Let's relieve your first worry: Using a showerhead to masturbate and have an orgasm is not going to cause you to have missed periods. Matter of fact, as long as the water is not to hot and not on a heavy pulse than it will not cause any harm and is a fine way of offering you stimulation, as long as you enjoy it.
You did not say how long it has been since your last period and if you are sexually active. You cannot get pregnant unless you are having intercourse with a male partner. If you are sexually active and have had sex, protected or unprotected, you should go to a teen health center for a check up and a pregnancy test ASAP. Teen health centers can see teenagers for sexually related reasons without your parent's consent and on a low/no cost basis. Also, if you are having sex, practice safer sex both for intercourse and oral sex by using a condom and another method of birth control like the pill or Depo-Provera. This will offer some protection against STDs and pregnancy. If you live in New Jersey, please cal the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.5199. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
If you have not had sex, missed periods, often called Amenorrhea are quite common among teen-aged females. During puberty and the first years following your first period, your body can take some time adjusting to a schedule for your period. If you have not had a period since you posted this question or if three months have passed since your last period, you should probably talk to your mother and make an appointment with your doctor. Although it is not uncommon to skip periods, there are some medical conditions that are treatable, which cause periods to become irregular.
