Mastubation Statistics

Published: 23 April 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I heard somewhere that 95% of males masturbate and 80% of females masturbate. I asked about 30 of my friends, and found that 100% of guys do it compared with 0% of females. People are obviously lying to me, any idea what the statistics are?

Dear Mastubation Statistics,

TeenHealthFX believes that masturbation is a very personal subject with some people and they may not be comfortable sharing the information face to face. One of the ways that allows people to talk about sensitive subjects is to allow them to do it anonymously. This is why TeenHealthFX goes to great lengths to guarantee our readers that their identity will be protected.

One of the largest studies ever conducted on human sexual behavior was by the Kinsey Institute over 50 years ago. The study was remarkable for its time since it remains perhaps the largest study on sexual behavior and made the claim that 92% of males reported having masturbated as opposed to 62% of females. At this point in time masturbation was still considered taboo and it raised the question, if so many people masturbate, why should one be ashamed of it. The study created a lot of controversy and many religious and conservative groups attacked the study and its findings (many of the complaints were valid). The survey had several statistical limitations. One of the biggest obstacles was that the sample was made up of white, middle class, college educated Americans under age 35. In order for the study to have a good validity the sample should be representative of the population.

Subsequent studies have shown these numbers to be lower and higher. The best way to answer your question is to say that masturbation is a normal health sexual activity and the majority of males and females practice it. It is a choice that each person makes and he or she may or may not want to share with others.
