Small Boobs

Published: April 24, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 13 years old, and I got my period last year. I have LOTS of pubic hair, yet my boobs are small (only 32A). Why is my breast growth delayed while the rest of me is growing so fast?

Dear Small Boobs,

TeenHealthFX thinks the reason is probably nature. We have no control over our development and the outcome is unpredictable. There are 5 stages of breast development, not everyone goes through all five. The stages can happen rapidly or slowly. Try not to get worried just yet. You are still only 13 and probably have a lot of time yet to keep growing.

By the start of your period, your breast should be well on their way to developing. However, in many girls they will continue to develop long after the start of her period. Like the rest of the changes happening in your body, breast growth is due to hormone levels. Your breasts grow in response to the hormone estrogen. Each woman produces different amounts of estrogen; therefore we each have a different breast size. That is why there is so much variety in breast sizes among women. Each woman is unique in size and shape.
