Peeing Hurts After Sex

Published: April 24, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 16-year-old girl that is sexually active. I have just started to get worried because my boyfriend has had many sex partners before me. Every time we had sex, he used a condom. But after the sex, I pee and it usually hurts and burns. Is this normal (only after sex)?

Dear Peeing Hurts After Sex,

Thanks for your question to TeenHealthFX. Congratulations to both of you for taking responsibility for your health by wearing condoms during sex. It is very important to use a condom every time you have sex. It is the most important way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Having pain and burning when urinating is called dysuria and no, it is not normal. There are many causes for dysuria. A common cause of dysuria is infection, often a urinary tract infection (bladder infection) or sometimes an STD. Dysuria after sex could also occur due to minor trauma or irritation to the area after intercourse.

It is important that you see a doctor as soon as possible. He/she will be able to help you with the cause of your dysuria. If you don't have a doctor or can't tell your parents and live in Northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 889.6350. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please call your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. Teen health centers can see teenagers confidentially (meaning you do not need your parent's permission) and on a reduced cost or no cost basis
