HPV From Mom?

Published: May 21, 2011
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 15 year old girl and I have never had sex. Lately I have been finding small bumps around my labia. I don't really do anything about them and they eventually go away after about 2-4 weeks. I know that my mom had HPV. I have had both doses of the vaccine but is there still a chance I could have gotten HPV from my mom?

Dear HPV From Mom?,

HPV, Human Papilloma Virus, commonly known as genital warts is a very common STD in the U.S. HPV is spread usually by intercourse and other sexual activities. Visible genital warts look like small painless hard spots on the bottom of the vaginal opening, but can also appear on the surrounding areas, anus and cervix.

Although it is rare you can get the HPV virus without have sexual contact. It can be passed from an infected mother to an infant during the birth process. It is possible to have what is known as a “fomite transfer.” This is when the virus is transferred to an object and another person uses the object while the virus is still live and it comes in contact with the vaginal area. An example would be sharing a moist towel right after someone with HPV had used it.

TeenHealthFX does not know whether what you are experiencing are symptoms of HPV but it would be very important to have it checked out. As soon as possible make an appointment with the doctor who gave you the 2 previous vaccination doses. Let her/him know your concerns and she/he will do a thorough exam and then advise you on the situation and if there is anything you should be doing.
