Dear TeenHealthFX,
I was wondering, after a woman has a Hysterectomy, can she still have sex?

Dear Sex After Hysterectomy,

A hysterectomy is a major surgical procedure done on a woman usually after a doctor has found a problem with some portion of her reproductive organs. A total hysterectomy is the removal of the entire uterus with or without the removal of her ovaries. Some hysterectomies can remove the ovaries and/or the cervix. These organs will either be removed through the vaginal opening or surgically (through a cut in the abdomen). The vaginal method is the least invasive.

The surgery has both its advantages and disadvantages. Most often the surgery is performed in order to alleviate discomfort, pain or abnormalities that the patient is experiencing. The patient is free to perform sexual actions after proper recovery from the hysterectomy. In most cases, the patient is free from the chronic pain experienced before the surgery and experiences no change in their sexual activity or drive. Often times the sex is said to be better afterwards because the original pain is no longer an issue.

However, there have been reported disadvantages after having a hysterectomy. When the ovaries are removed the level of the hormone estrogen is decreased which can cause fatigue, joint pain, decreased sexual drive, hot flashes, night sweats, depression and some weight gain. Most of these side effects can be controlled through hormone replacements. It is necessary to be aware of the issues that a woman must deal with when going through these dramatic changes to her body, they are often hard to deal with. As far as a woman's sex life, it is really up to the individual. If you have any more questions about hysterectomies, you can check out the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

I hope I have answered your question and best wishes to whom ever it is who has had to undergo this type of surgery.
