Bleeding And Masturbation

Published: 16 de Janeiro de 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 16-year-old girl.  I masturbated yesterday.  I got done and found that I had some bleeding.  I thought it was that time of the month, but it turns out that it is not.  Now today, I masturbated again and I bled again.  I haven't had sex yet and I don't use any sex toys.  Can you give me any information about what is happening?  Thanks

Dear Bleeding And Masturbation,

Good question.

Masturbation is a very healthy practice and hopefully gives you sexual satisfaction.  TeenHealthFX can see why you would be concerned if you are experiencing some bleeding and spotting afterwards.

Since you are not sexually active, your hymeneal ring in your vagina may not have been broken yet.  If you are inserting your fingers into your vagina, you may be irritating or tearing this thin layer of skin, which could be causing some bleeding and spotting.  This would be completely normal.  Most females' hymeneal ring breaks at some point in their life either through regular physical activity (like exercise) or through sexual penetration (either by a finger or penis).  You stated that you are not using any sexual toys, but we are unsure if you are inserting your fingers.  If you have long nails, you may also be scratching the inside of your vagina, which could produce some spotting.  If you are experiencing any type of pain or irritation from this bleeding, you should definitely see a doctor.

Masturbation should be a pleasurable experience that allows you to get to know your body and what feels good.  It should not be painful.  As said earlier, see your doctor or go to a teen health center if the bleeding continues or if you are having any pain.  If you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at (973) 889.6350 or call your local Planned Parenthood.  The above listed resources can see you for sexual health reasons without your parent's permission and on a low/no cost basis.  The doctors at these centers will be able to discuss all of your concerns with you in a non-embarrassing and confidential way.
