Stringy Sperm

Published: August 12, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am wondering what the normal consistency of sperm (semen) is. My ejaculate sometimes has more solid and almost string like pieces in it. Is this normal or do I have a serious problem? If it?s a problem, what can be done to correct it? Thanks!

Dear Stringy Sperm,

Your problem sounds similar to the one mentioned in Chunky Semen. Upon ejaculation, semen is normally a whitish, cream colored, jell like substance. In the time period after ejaculation (in as little as 5 minutes) your semen consistency can change and appear to be "chunky" or "stringy."

If your semen has the consistency you described immediately after you ejaculate, then you should consult a doctor. This is especially true if you are having any pain, burning while urinating or discharge from your penis. Your doctor will be able to determine if there is a problem, and if there is, how to correct it.

If you would like to meet with one of our doctors and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
