One Condom Or Two?

Published: January 9, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi, and I are interested in having sex but we needed one question answered first. Is it safer to use 2 condoms rather than 1 for you first time? Since it is the first time for both of us, he will not be thrusting hard or anything, but I have heard places that two condoms is worse because the friction can cause them both to tear. Please help me? thanks!

Dear One Condom Or Two?,

That is a terrific question - and good for you for practicing safe sex.

Single condoms are a reliable form of pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention. If used properly, their effectiveness is about 97 percent. Some people do try to beat that by using an extra condom, but there is no science to support that theory.

Most health care providers and educators feel confident that one condom is sufficient for protection and so do not typically endorse or suggest "doubling up." If you would like to use a second method of birth control, there are several options including one condom with spermicidal foam, a diaphragm, or the pill.

Since you are about to become sexually active, TeenHealthFX thinks it would be a good idea to make an appointment with a doctor first. A teen health clinic can see you without your parent's permission, confidentially and on a low/no cost basis. They can help to educate you in making the best possible decisions regarding sex, birth control and STD protection and answer questions like these in more detail. If you live in Northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
