Any Reason I Should Not Wax

Published: April 8, 2010
Dear TeenHealthFX,

It seems like all the girls at school wax or shaves their pubic hair off totally.  I am too embarrassed to ask them and am not sure if I should do it.  I do get my bikini line waxed but am considering waxing it all off.  I am concerned that any boy I decide to hook up with will expect no pubic hair so I will be embarrassed if I have any.  Is there any health reason that I should not do this?

Dear Any Reason I Should Not Wax,

Waxing pubic hair is a personal decision and it is up to you to decide what you are most comfortable with. There is no reason to be embarrassed for having pubic hair.  Some women prefer waxing because they like the way it looks and others decide not to because they do not want to put the time and effort into it. When the time comes when you feel you are ready to enter into a sexual relationship you can always discuss this issue with your partner beforehand.

There are health risks associated with bikini and a full pubic wax. The hair in the genital area is there to protect the sensitive skin and mucous membranes. Waxing takes away a layer of the body’s natural protection and also tearing off tiny parts of the skin's outermost layer. This can create an opening in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter the body and cause an infection under the skin.  The waxing process can also create an inflammation, which can trap bacteria beneath the skin. All of this becomes a good environment for skin infections, such as staph, folliculitis (an inflammation of one or more hair follicles), and ingrown hairs. For this reason some physicians do not recommend waxing for persons suffering from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation since they are more susceptible to infections. Dr. Linda K. Franks, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine, also cautions that people who have weakened immune system or diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease, skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, should avoid the procedure of waxing completely.

TeenHealthFX strongly recommends that if you are going to do a bikini or complete pubic hair waxing that you have it done by a professional.  Most of these health concerns mentioned can be avoided or minimized by following a few simple guidelines.

·         Make sure that the cosmetologist or aesthetician you will be choosing, has a license in your state and has received training in Bikini and Vaginal waxing.

·         Make sure the facility is clean and has a good reputation. You can probably check online to see if they have any past health code violations or history of complaints.

·         Before starting the procedure make sure the practitioner thoroughly washes her/his hands.

·         Ask a cosmetologist to apply a hard wax as it bonds more to the hair and less to the skin. Speed waxing is fast and easy but is usually more painful and more likely to cause skin damage.

·         For a few days following your waxing, apply an over-the-counter topical antibiotic cream and an anti-inflammatory 1% hydrocortisone cream to the area. This will ease irritation and help ward off potential infection.

·         Be aware of the signs of infection. Check yourself with a hand mirror (look for inflamed ingrown hairs, rashes, or raw, open sores or cuts). "See a doctor ASAP if you develop redness or swelling in the area, an itching or burning sensation, peeling of the skin, or a fever.
