Vag Is Bleeding From Rough Sexual Contact

Published: May 24, 2010
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Me and my girlfriend had sex two nights ago and I think she did something too rough because now my vag is bleeding and I think its from the inside. We can't tell if she broke the hymon but its still bleeding. I don't have my period because I don't feel cramps. Should I see a doctor? If so what should I say because my parents don't know were together. I want to keep it that way or ill lose her...

Dear Vag Is Bleeding From Rough Sexual Contact,

The bleeding you are experiencing could be a result of your hymen having been broken, it could be due to menstruation, or it could be related to some problem in the uterus. If you were a virgin, had sex and your hymen was broken, there could certainly be bleeding for up to a couple of days. In addition, even without the presence of cramps it is still possible for a woman to get her period. So a broken hymen or menstruation are definite possibilities here.

If the bleeding goes away within a week, you are probably okay (however, it never hurts to consult with a doctor just to be sure and to calm your own anxieties about it!). But if the bleeding doesn’t stop after a week, or the blood flow is so heavy that you are feeling dizzy from the extent of blood loss (such as when you go from a sitting to standing position or when you are walking around), then you definitely need to see a medical health professional.

In the meantime TeenHealthFX does want to point out that Motrin can slow down vaginal bleeding – but check with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure that it is appropriate for you to take.

FX appreciates that you are concerned about your mother finding out about this relationship because it sounds like she would put pressure on you to end the relationship. However, it is important not to let this concern get in the way of your receiving any necessary medical help. If you need to see a doctor, you could tell your mother you think something is off with your period and you want to meet with your doctor – and then when you meet with your doctor ask him/her what the confidentiality policy is about sexual health related issues. You could also check with a Planned Parenthood clinic if you do not feel comfortable using your regular doctor or gyn. But if there for some reason there is no way to keep this from your mother and you need medical help, do not sacrifice your physical well-being to avoid dealing with this situation with your mother.

Once you have everything taken care of with your physical health with this situation, FX strongly suggests you find a trusted adult to talk to about this situation with your girlfriend and your mother. It is a very difficult position to be in to hide who you are or a significant part of your life from loved ones and family members. FX can imagine that this has felt like a strain for you, and anxiety-provoking at times as well – so please consider getting some guidance and support from a trusted adult such as an extended family member, parent of a friend, school counselor, or whomever else can offer you a private and helpful conversation about this issue.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
