Period Not Regular Yet After Three Years

Published: November 1, 2009
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I've had my period for three years now but it hasn't become regular yet, ad it's usually less the 28 days apart, is that ok?

Dear Period Not Regular Yet After Three Years,

Generally the menstrual cycle is fairly regulated after 3 years, however, it is important to remember that there is always some level of variability between women when it comes to menstruation.

To rule out any underlying medical issues, FX suggests that you meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist or adolescent medicine specialist. It would be helpful for you to present to your doctor’s office with a menstrual calendar including the start date of each period and how long each period lasted for. Keep in mind that when figuring out the number of days in your cycle, be sure to count from the start of one period to the start of the next (NOT the end of your period to the start of the next). Your doctor can run any necessary tests, to rule out things like hormonal imbalances or thyroid problems, and determine whether there is anything going on medically that needs to be treated, or this is simply a case of your period not being completely regulated yet.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
